Storm Surge Reduction by Mangroves
This report explores the capacity of mangroves to reduce storm surge water levels and inundation, and hence to reduce the impact of storm surges on coastal populations and infrastructure. The world’s coastal margins are among the most densely populated and intensively used places on Earth. Coastal populations are growing rapidly, as is associated infrastructure, industry and agriculture. These populations and coastal lands can be at risk from natural hazards such as waves, storms and tsunamis. The numbers of people at risk are increasing with the expansion of human populations, and the risks will likely be exacerbated by the effects of climate change and associated sea level rise. At the same time, coastal ecosystems are also impacted as populations expand, reducing ecosystem resilience and their ability to provide ecosystem services such as coastal defence.
